      Bigger (and cooler) than a purse, smaller than a messenger bag
      Any real New Yorker carries around a bag (not a purse, but a real bag) for when they’re on the go, because oftentimes your pockets won’t carry enough. It doesn’t have to hold a lot, but it does have to store the things you need when you aren’t home: something to read; something for writing and taking notes; a protein bar or other favorite snack; power pack(s), batteries and charging cables for your phone and other everyday gadgets, some breath mints/gum, sunglasses for when you get out from underground, and if you’re more tech-oriented, a computer and/or a tablet. Messenger bags are great, especially if you’re packing for a day-plus to be out and about - but sometimes, they are a bit bulky. Worse, when you sling them over your shoulder, you’re probably going to poke someone in the ribs when the train gets crowded, or take up a seat-and-a-half when you’re sitting and it’s in your lap (it’s the messenger bag version of manspreading) - they’re wide, it’s baked into the formula for messenger bags. This bag does a good job of covering the storage of the odds and ends a New Yorker (or other urbanite) needs for getting through most days while not being as large as most messenger bags. It’s vertical instead of horizontal for crowd-friendliness - a big plus. If I were designing it, I would have wanted to go all “black label” with this one, with things like: waterproof side pockets to hold things like a water bottle, your folding umbrella or a glasses case; some pen pockets under the flap; a better configuration for the laptop pocket (the pocket behind it is almost the right size for holding a tablet, but it’s not padded to protect it). Overall, though, this does a fine job of holding just the things your average person needs to get through your average day - and it looks like it’ll last for years.

      Great bag for travel, protects laptop well
      I’ve used the regular Manhattan Bag for years, carrying around my laptop and books and stuff, commuting on the Washington DC Metro, and traveling by air. I got the Manhattan Laptop Bag when I got a new laptop. The Laptop Bag has all the indestructable features I liked about the Manhattan Bag that served me so well, and protects my laptop much better. The vertical shape takes up less space going through TSA lines or on crowded mass transit.

      At Duke University circa 1998-90, you weren’t “cool” if you didn’t carry a Manhattan Portage bag!! My first bag (which I still carry and it looks brand new) was a grey, horizontal tote (I won’t say laptop....wow I’m old.)
      My new Red Manhattan Laptop Bag 13” is the bees knees!! I stick my MacBook Pro 13” right into its swanky little cushioned sleeve, grab a few pens, keys, cell phone, and I’m off to work!! There is still plenty of room for the laptop power cord, so don’t worry :-)
      I am a pharmacist, so I needed a bag that not only fit and protected my laptop, but also gave me the functionality to change from work and go straight into a casual meeting (i.e drinks with the girls.)
      Even after 20+ years, my Manhattan Portage bag is doing great, and my newer 13” laptop version fits my lifestyle perfectly. I love it!!!

      I'm on my 3rd Manhattan bag. The past two just wore out. I washed the gray one so much it lost its color. Must have been at least 10 years old. I love this bag. The new back open pocket. The last two didn't have it. The slightly larger size (I think). I carry my Mac Air or my iPad. Papers. The usual stuff. Bought an accessory bag to had to the strap. Perfect. When you live in Pittsburgh, you notice who else has a Portage bag. Nod. Nod. Wink. Wink.
